I. Bowen "Bio" (1/00
version)
Professor Robert Bowen joined the University of
Washington after earning his Ph.D. from the Stanford Business School in 1978. He
specializes in financial reporting and managerial accounting. Professor Bowen has written
a number of widely used cases and has garnered over 25 teaching awards at UW, including
one from every graduating Executive MBA class since 1987. Professor Bowen's research
has earned him national and school-wide awards. His papers have appeared in such
top-tier academic journals as the Journal of Accounting and Economics and The
Accounting Review, and one has been labeled as a "classic" in the accounting
literature. His current research interests address incentives for earnings
management and the stock-price-relevance of financial and non-financial data. His
recent co-authored work includes a study of the value-relevance of alternative earnings
metrics such as "economic value added" (EVA®) and has been cited in The
Wall Street Journal, Fortune and CFO Magazine. A
summary of this work was recently published in the Journal of Applied
Corporate Finance and was the most downloaded paper on the Social Science
Research Network during November 1999 and is currently listed among the
all-time top- ten on the Accounting Research Network at http://papers.ssrn.com/toptens/tt_ntwk_204.html.
